Shuri Castle is one of Japan’s most renowned castles, located in Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture. It was registered as a World Heritage Site in 2000. Construction is believed to have begun around the 14th century. It developed as the political, diplomatic, and cultural center of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

Shuri Castle sits atop a hill approximately 130 meters above sea level, offering views of Naha city and the beautiful ocean. Its stone walls, distinguished by their curved beauty, and vermilion-lacquered buildings create a tropical landscape distinct from other Japanese castles.

Shuri Castle has been destroyed by fire and rebuilt several times. Eight buildings were lost in the 2019 fire. Reconstruction is currently underway, aiming for the completion of the Main Hall in autumn 2026.
