Nijo Castle is a historic castle in Kyoto and is selected as one of the Best 100 Castles of Japan. Construction began in 1601 by the first shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa, as a residence for the shogun during visits to Kyoto and to protect the Imperial Palace. It was completed in 1603 and served as an important base of the Tokugawa shogunate in Kyoto.
In 1623, the third shogun, Iemitsu Tokugawa, carried out major renovations, including the development of the Honmaru Palace.
In 1867, the fifteenth shogun, Yoshinobu Tokugawa, announced the return of political power to the emperor at Ninomaru Palace in Nijo Castle, marking a major turning point in Japanese history.
The main highlight is Ninomaru Palace, where visitors can admire beautiful wall paintings by Kano Tanyu. Other highlights include the Higashi-Otemon Gate, corner towers, stone walls, moats, and the Ninomaru Garden.
Designated as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage site in 1994, Nijo Castle is a must-visit destination where you can experience Japan’s rich history and culture.
