Inuyama Castle is one of Japan’s most famous castles, located in Inuyama City, Aichi Prefecture. It is selected as one of the Best 100 Castles of Japan. The castle was built in 1537 by Nobuyasu Oda, the uncle of Nobunaga Oda, on a small hill along the Kiso River. It stands on the border of former Owari (Aichi Prefecture) and Mino (Gifu Prefecture), and played an important role during the Sengoku period.
The castle was ruled by several clans, including the Oda, Ogasawara, and Naruse families. In 1617, Masanari Naruse became the lord, and the current castle keep was developed during that time. This keep is one of the 12 original castle keeps remaining in Japan and is designated as a National Treasure.
The highlight of Inuyama Castle is its original castle keep. The Kiso River flows behind the castle, and its defensive design makes use of the natural terrain.
From the top floor of the castle keep, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Kiso River and the surrounding town. At the foot of the castle, Inuyama Castle Town is a popular area where visitors can enjoy street food and walking tours.
