Himeji Castle is one of Japan’s most famous castles, located in Himeji City, Hyogo Prefecture. It is selected as one of the “Best 100 Castles of Japanese” and was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Known as “Shirasagi-jo” (White Heron Castle) for its beautiful white plaster exterior, it attracts many tourists.
The origin of Himeji Castle dates back to 1333, when Norimura Akamatsu built a fort on this site. In 1580, Yoshitaka Kuroda presented the castle to Hideyoshi Hashiba, who developed it with stone walls and a main keep. Later, Terumasa Ikeda and Tadamasa Honda completed the castle in its current form.
Today, eight buildings including the main keep are designated as National Treasures, and 74 buildings such as turrets and gates are designated as Important Cultural Properties. The castle is well preserved and represents traditional Japanese castle architecture.
