Edo Castle is one of the largest castle sites in Japan, located in the area of the Imperial Palace in Tokyo. It was first built in 1457 by Dokan Ota, and later became the residence of Ieyasu Tokugawa in 1590. After that, it developed as the political center of the Edo Shogunate.
A castle keep was first built in 1607 and was rebuilt three times in total, but it was destroyed by a great fire in 1657 and was never rebuilt. Today, visitors can see the stone walls, moats, and the base of the former keep.
Highlights include Sakurada Gate, Otemon Gate, and Fujimi Turret. Surrounded by greenery in the heart of Tokyo, it is a popular place where visitors can enjoy both history and scenery.
