Hirosaki Castle

Hirosaki Castle is a hirayama-style castle located in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture. It is also known as Takaoka Castle. Tamenobu Tsugaru, who unified the Tsugaru region, planned the construction of the castle. His successor, Nobuhira Tsugaru, began construction in 1610, and the castle was completed in 1611. Hirosaki Castle served as the residence of the Tsugaru clan for about 260 years.

One of the main attractions of Hirosaki Castle is its many surviving structures from the Edo period. The current Castle keep was rebuilt in 1810 and is one of the few surviving castle keeps in the Tohoku region. In addition to the Castle keep, three turrets and five castle gates have survived. These nine structures are designated as Important Cultural Property.

The former castle grounds are now Hirosaki Park. The park retains three layers of moats and earthen walls. It is also famous for its cherry blossoms, attracting many visitors in spring.

Hirosaki Castle is one of the Best 100 Castles of Japan and is an important historic site in the Tohoku region.
