Matsumoto Castle, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most famous historic castles. Its castle keep and related structures are designated as National Treasures. It is also selected as one of the “Best 100 Castles of Japan” and is one of the twelve original surviving castle keeps in Japan.
The origin of Matsumoto Castle dates back to Fukashi Castle, built in 1504 by the Ogasawara clan. It was renamed Matsumoto Castle in 1582. In 1590, following the transfer of Ieyasu Tokugawa to the Kanto region, Kazumasa Ishikawa entered the castle. He and his son Yasunaga developed the current castle, including the castle keep, turrets, stone walls, and castle town.
The castle keep is a five-tier, six-story structure and is one of only two surviving keeps of this type in Japan.
With the Northern Alps as its backdrop, Matsumoto Castle features a striking contrast of black and white. Reflected in the surrounding moat, it is a beautiful and highly photogenic destination popular with visitors.
