Matsuyama Castle

Matsuyama Castle is a hilltop castle located in the center of Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture. It stands on Mount Katsuyama, 132 meters above sea level. The castle keep is one of Japan’s 12 surviving castle keeps. A total of 21 buildings, including the castle keep, are designated as Important Cultural Properties of Japan.

The construction of Matsuyama Castle was started by Yoshiaki Kato. After the Battle of Sekigahara, he was given the Iyo domain and began building the castle in 1602. In 1628, Kato moved to Aizu. After the rule of Tadachika Gamo, the Matsudaira family became lords of the castle in 1635.

One of the highlights of Matsuyama Castle is its castle keep, which was rebuilt in 1852. From the top floor, visitors can enjoy views of Matsuyama City and the Seto Inland Sea.

Dogo Onsen is one of the most famous attractions in Matsuyama. Together with Matsuyama Castle, visitors can enjoy the history and culture of castles and hot springs in the city.
